Staying Motivated at the Gym

Staying motivated at the gym is essential to maintaining one’s overall wellbeing, by releasing endorphins and achieving visible results. However, sometimes it can be particularly difficult to find the motivation to get off the couch and engage in some cardio, especially when you’re feeling exhausted and unmotivated.

LUXits ambassador for wellness and health Ben shared his top three tips for staying motivated at the gym and then getting the visible results that you deserve

1.Know what you are doing this for. Fundamentally human beings are designed to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Hence its why there are more people in the pub on Friday night then in the gym, because of its fun! So it’s important to consider exercise as an investment in yourself, and embrace it as a fun and beneficial pastime.  This can be done by establishing a clearly defined and positive reason for working out, e.g “I’m working out so that I have more energy to play with my kids,” or “I’m working out so I can feel confident in a swimsuit.” Such reasons support your gym routine and will make you more inclined to go.

Consistency at all costs. When you start or begin anything new – results rarely come immediately, making it hard to stay motivated. Instead of stressing out or becoming disheartened remember that if you persevere and continue to workout with regularity your results will become visible. Also the more you go to the gym the easier it will become as you will develop a newfound intrinsic motivation that makes working out a natural part of your routine.

Get the right education and support: Knowledge is power! Find a personal trainer or educate yourself about the do’s and don’ts, so that from the start you are working out the right way. There is nothing more demotivating that going to the gym for months ( or even years ) and getting no visible results, or even worse injuring yourself because you used an incorrect technique. So engage a trainer to help teach you to train correctly from the start (and perhaps to give you that extra kick in the butt until you are ready to go it alone) – but then go it alone. Be the person who goes to the gym not because someone is waiting for you, but because it is simply what you do, period.
